Brandon Marshall Trial for Allegedly Punching a Woman
It seems like ages ago – probably because he has been on three teams since – when, in March 2012, Brandon Marshall allegedly punched a woman in the face. Her civil lawsuit against Marshall is finally headed to trial in New York federal court tomorrow. The trial is scheduled to last three days and includes claims for assault, battery, and infliction of emotional distress.
The Plaintiff originally filed the lawsuit pro se but has since retained counsel. Here is a copy of the lawsuit, filed in March 2013.
Al Jazeera’s Answer Due in Howard/Zimmerman Defamation Lawsuits
After a brief hiatus, the Al Jazeera HGH story is back in the news. On Friday the MLB announced that one player named in the report, free agent catcher Taylor Teagarden, will be suspended 80 games for violating the league’s drug policy. As for the other players named in the report, the MLB’s investigation remains ongoing.
In the courtroom, Al Jazeera’s answers to Ryan Howard’s and Ryan Zimmerman’s defamation lawsuits are due on Friday (4/8). This will be Al Jazeera’s first chance to respond to the defamation allegations in federal court.
Jose Reyes Suspension Coming?
Jose Reyes’ domestic violence lawsuit was supposed to go to trial today until it was announced last week that charges have been dropped because his wife is no longer cooperating with prosecutors.
What does this mean for Reyes this season? The MLB announced that he will remain on the paid suspension list until the MLB finishes its investigation. Reyes can still be suspended under the MLB domestic violence policy. This case raises a number of fascinating issues with the policy, and we will be posting a more in-depth story later today or tomorrow.

A Tradition Unlike Any Other
The golf world’s favorite week means a little more to me this year. As many of you know, I recently moved to lovely Augusta, GA and, since I will be moving again before next year’s tournament, this will be my only Masters while living here. As you might imagine, the tournament runs this town for this week (and arguably all year). I have been doing some research and talking to locals and will be tweeting a bunch of interesting facts about the tournament and the town later this week. Follow along on twitter @WerlySportsLaw.
